Summer 2 Week 1

British Sign Language This Week

This week, our children have continued to build their communication skills through British Sign Language (BSL), developing both confidence and understanding in a meaningful and engaging way. It has been fantastic to see pupils across the school applying their learning in different contexts and showing great enthusiasm.

Year 3: Months and Birthdays

In Year 3, pupils have been learning how to sign the months of the year. They have worked hard to remember each sign and link it to their own experiences, particularly their birthdays. The children enjoyed sharing when their birthdays are using BSL, practising both recognising and expressing key vocabulary. This has supported not only their signing skills but also their ability to communicate personal information clearly and confidently.

Year 4: Weather Conversations

Year 4 pupils have been completing an assessment focused on weather vocabulary and incorporating it into simple conversations. The children have been practising signs for different types of weather, such as sunny, rainy, windy, and cold, before bringing these into their conversations.  It has been wonderful to see them using their signs confidently in their conversations.

Year 6: Classroom Placement and Direction

In Year 6, pupils have been undertaking their BSL assessment linked to placement and position within the classroom. They have been learning how to describe where objects are located using directional language, such as “on the left” and “on the right.” This has involved careful observation and clear signing to explain positions accurately. The children showed excellent focus and precision.  The children have produced some good placement, and their partners have been able to use their receptive skills to draw the classroom.

A Brilliant Week of Progress

Across all year groups, it has been a pleasure to see pupils developing their confidence and fluency in BSL. From sharing personal information to holding conversations and describing the world around them, the children are making great progress. We are very proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing how their skills continue to grow in the coming weeks.
