Summer 1, Week 5 blog

Date: 15th May 2026 @ 2:04pm

English: This week in English, the children practised skills to support with writing a newspaper report. At the start of the week, we did some modelled writing as a class, using interesting adjectives, verbs and practising using speech. The children also learned about how to sequence events using interesting fronted adverbials. At the end of the week, they planned their own newspaper reports.

Maths: This week, we recapped 3D shapes. The children explored the properties of 3D shapes, including faces, vertices, and edges, and answered a range of related questions. They also revisited angles and turns, learning how shapes change when turned clockwise or anticlockwise through quarter, half, and three-quarter turns. In addition, the children learned about different types of lines, including horizontal, vertical, perpendicular, and parallel lines. Towards the end of the week, they reviewed lines of symmetry and identified lines of symmetry in 2D shapes.

History: T The children learned about a range of interesting Roman artefacts and discovered what these tell us about Roman culture in Britain. For example, they explored Roman pottery decorated with images of gladiators, learning that gladiator contests were a popular and celebrated form of entertainment. The children also had lots of fun learning about Roman roads and even had the opportunity to build their own roads using rocks and sand, helping them to understand how durable Roman roads were constructed!

R.E: This week the children have compared festivals celebrated by different religions. They have looked at what’s similar and different between Christmas, Eid, Easter and Passover. They also discussed what these festivals teach people about community values.

PSHE: This week, the children learned about the purpose of marriage. We learned what marriage ceremonies look like for different religions, and summarised that although there were differences, the main purpose was a celebration of love.
