Summer 1, Week 1 blog
Date: 17th Apr 2026 @ 3:54pm
Welcome to the summer term!
English: This week in English, we began exploring diary entries. The children examined a range of examples, discussing who had written them, when they were written, and their purpose. They also identified key features, such as the use of the past tense and first-person perspective. This provided a strong foundation and has helped prepare the children for writing their own diary entries in the coming weeks.
Maths: This week, we recapped place value. We began by revisiting how to read, write, and represent numbers using Dienes equipment. We then moved on to adding and subtracting 10 and 100 using mental maths strategies. The children also compared numbers using the greater than, less than, and equal to symbols. Finally, they practised ordering numbers in both ascending and descending order.
History: On Tuesday, the children thoroughly enjoyed our Roman Day to launch our brand new topic. Thank you for your support — they looked amazing, and their shields were very impressive. Throughout the day, the children learned what it was like to be a Roman soldier and even made their own helmets. They also explored mosaics, learning how wealthy Roman households used them to display status and power, before creating their own designs. In addition, the children had lots of fun reading Roman numerals and writing their names using the Roman alphabet.
PSHE: The children are going to be focusing on a unit on diversity this half term. The first lesson was about how to respect other people’s similarities and differences. The children enjoyed sharing their likes and dislikes and talking about what made them unique e.g. having family live in different countries.
R.E- This half terms key question is, "Why religious festivals and events are remembered and celebrated?" This week the children discussed festivals and events that they have celebrated so far in their lives and why they think these are important. The children talked about popular festivals that are celebrated around the world like Christmas, Eid, Halloween, Easter and Diwali.
Computing- The children will be looking at coding this term. This week they learnt how to use an animal and character flow chart to create a computer program. They learnt that a flowchart helps when writing a code as it organises the procedures in clear steps.
Spanish- This week the children learnt how to say the names of fruits in Spanish.
I am really pleased that Magniificent Monkeys have won the MYON award this week! They have read a total of 483 minutes! Well done Monkeys! Keep it up!
Thank you for your continued support in helping your child complete weekly home learning tasks and reading at home.
