Starfish Summer 1, Week 3
Date: 30th Apr 2026 @ 7:26am
Mathematcians and Artists!
In Maths, we continued to work on missing number calculations- this week linked to subtraction. We learnt that missing numbers can be placed anywhere within a calculation, as can the equal symbol. To find the missing number, we used the inverse operation and counted on from the smallest number to the largest number. Later in the week, we applied our counting on strategy to finding the difference between close together numbers and finished the week by choosing whether to count on or use our partitioning method to solve a mixture of subtraction calculations.
In English, we started our new unit of work on Paddington Bear! We read about Paddington’s visit to London and all the fantastic places he visited. In groups, we placed the story pictures in the correct order and then acted out the story- it was a lot of fun! We have also continued to practise our ‘ready to write’ routines making sure we are sitting in the correct position to start our writing- backs straight, bottoms at the back of the chair and feet flat on the floor. The children have also been making sure that their ascenders and descenders are clear.
In our Topic work, we have continued to learn about Kings and Queens from the past, focusing on William the Conqueror. We watched a super clip which explained the Battle of Hasting. We then looked at artwork linked to the battle and created our own tapestry images. The children’s drawings are very detailed and look great on our classroom display.
In our PSHE lessons, we have been thinking about money. So far, we have looked at how money has transformed throughout the years, how money pays bills and what would be the right thing to do if we found money. The Starfish, have not only listened carefully but also had some very mature conversations, including explaining the difference between a credit and a debit card- amazing knowledge and understanding shown!
