Starfish Spring 2, Week 3
Date: 13th Mar 2026 @ 8:42am
What another busy week we have had! This week has been National Science week. The theme for this year was curiosity. In Year 2, we decided to be curious about chemical reactions! We first learnt what a chemical reaction is and then carried out our own experiment. Elmer the Elephant got in contact to say that the baby elephants all had dirty teeth and needed a way to clean them. We decided to help by making elephant toothpaste! We mixed hydrogen peroxide with yeast (and a few other things) and watched in amazement as a new, foamy substance was formed. It looked just like elephant toothpaste as it squirted out the top of the bottle! The children said it was their best experiment yet! Elmer called to say thank you too!
In Maths, we focused our learning on fractions. We learnt that two quarters is the same as a half and that three quarters is larger than a half. We found fractions of shapes and numbers. The children had remembered the ‘sharing’ method from previous work to help find fraction of number answers. We also recalled our doubles to 24, linking them to multiplying by 2.
In English, we published our non-chronological coastline reports. The children all worked really hard to form ‘paragraphs’ of writing under the correct subheading, as well as remembering to include all key features taught. We were particularly impressed with their editing skills, with many children now doing this independently.
