Starfish Spring 1, week 2

Date: 15th Jan 2026 @ 3:54pm

Tremendous Topic!

We have had a super ‘topic’ week, continuing our learning about Coastlines. We started the week off learning about erosion. As a class we set up an experiment with sand, water, rocks and cubes to test if building a water defence would stop the houses (cubes) from falling. The children worked excellently as a team to build the ‘rip rap’ wall and we all concluded that sea defences are needed to stop erosion at the coast. We also had a super lesson on maps, focusing on keys. In teams, we were able to look at the key symbols and work out what they represented and find them on the map. We were really impressed with the children’s detective skills!

In Maths, we have been looking at number. We have been using the more than/ less than symbols, partitioning using part-whole models and complex partitioning using tens and ones manipulatives. The children have all worked really hard, and we will continue more work on number throughout the year.

In English, we continued our new narrative unit of work based on the story- Sally and the Limpet (linking to our work on Coastlines). The children have been looking at grammar aspects of the story- including expanded noun phrases, verbs and adverbials. We made a super class list of adjectives to improve our sentences too. We also made a whole class story map with actions! The children were excellent at retelling the story- ready to write their own version next week.
