Starfish Spring 1, Week 1

Date: 12th Jan 2026 @ 12:07pm

It has been lovely seeing all the children back at school with smiles on their faces and tales of holiday fun. We got straight back into our learning by introducing our new topic this term- Coastlines. We had a super afternoon exploring shells, rock pools, maps, physical and human features and water safety. The children also wrote questions that they would like to find out about Whitby as this will be the main place we focus on over the coming weeks.

In Maths, we have been looking at data. We have seen and made tally charts and pictograms. The children have had to think really hard and interpret the data too! They’ve had to answer questions about most popular, least popular, how many more, how many altogether etc. This was made even harder when they had to look at a key to see how many votes each picture in the pictograph was worth! Tricky work but everyone tried super hard!

In English, we started our new narrative unit of work based on the story- Sally and the Limpet (linking to our work on Coastlines). The children will eventually be writing their own version of the story, using their super imaginations! This week, we have focused on different types of punctuation- full stops, capital letters, question marks and exclamation marks- linking our sentences to our story Sally and the Limpet. We have been using actions to help us remember the different types of punctuation- which has been lots of fun!

A great first week of 2026!
