This week in Maths, we have been learning how to subtract ones from a 2-digit number using a hundred square. The children worked hard to count back accurately and used their hundred squares to help them solve subtraction calculations. We also practised bridging through a tens boundary, for example subtracting from numbers such as 36 and taking away 7- meaning the children had to bridge through the 30’s into the 20’s. We then moved on to counting backwards in 10’s from any 2-digit number- again using a 100 square to support this. The class showed great resilience when tackling these more challenging problems and we were pleased with their progress.
In English, our grammar focus has been on the conjunctions but and because, linked to our class story Oh Jack! The children learnt how conjunctions join ideas together and help to make sentences more interesting. They enjoyed creating their own sentences about the characters and events in the story using these key words.
In Art, we completed our Colour Quest unit of work. The children explored primary and secondary colours, experimented with mixing colours and learnt about different hues. They thoroughly enjoyed creating their final pieces and demonstrating their understanding of colour theory.
In Music, we finished our unit based on Tony Chestnut. The children worked hard to learn and perform the song, paying close attention to pitch and rhythm. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow, and they performed the song beautifully with excellent pitch control.
We wish the children a lovely half term and look forward to seeing them back to school on Tuesday 3rd November.
