Spring 1, Week 4 Monkeys' Class Blog

Date: 30th Jan 2026 @ 1:37pm

Week 4:

English: This week in English, the children learned about newspaper articles. They took on the role of interviewers following the eruption of Mount Reigate (a fictional volcano) and explored the key features of newspaper writing. These included headlines, introductory paragraphs, and quotes from witnesses. The children also focused on using important vocabulary linked to this unit, such as local residentscivilians, and emergency services.

Maths:
In Maths, the children revisited division strategies. We recapped how to use bus stop division, and the children engaged well with this method. They then moved on to learning about inverse operations to solve multiplication and division problems, for example:
3 × 4 = 12 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Geography:
This week in Geography, the children learned about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. They explored the sequence of events during the eruption and learned about the destruction caused to the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Ask your child if they can remember a fact about this terrible disaster?

PSHE:
In PSHE, the children read a social story about bullying and discussed the events that took place. They learned coping strategies and explored the important message that while we cannot always control what others do, we can control our own actions. This included understanding how to help others and seek support if they see something unkind or unsafe happening.

In BSL, the children practised having conversations about their favourite hobbies and when they do them. In PE, the children continued to explore how to carry out a backwards pass in tag rugby.
