Sharks Spring 1 Week 5

Date: 6th Feb 2026 @ 4:07pm

Amazing maths!

In maths, we have continued our learning on multiplication and division, focusing on how each operation is the inverse of the other. We have practised counting in our 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and linking these to full calculation sentences. The children are becoming much quicker at answering multiplication questions and are beginning to use mental methods rather than relying on written strategies. We have been really impressed with not only the children’s progress but also their enthusiasm for learning their times tables- keep up the hard work Sharks!

In English, we started out new unit of work on letters. We are linking this unit of work to our Topic work on Whitby, by writing a letter to the Mayor of Whitby to inform her of the dangers of plastics in the ocean. We have started the unit by researching plastic pollution, with many of the children being shocked about how much plastic actually ends up in the sea and how this then effects the sea creatures. By watching clips and researching through reading, the children are extremely motivated to write their letters and let their voices and opinions be heard!

In our Topic lessons, we have continued our Coastlines unit of work. We had great fun designing our own coastal towns in teams, thinking carefully about physical and human features that we needed to include. The children worked together, thinking carefully about where to place specific features and making a key on their maps, making them easier to read and understand. Once they had finished, each group presented their map back to the class. They did an amazing job and made us all want to go on holiday!
