Shark’s Weekly Blog (Autumn 1 week 4)

What a great week we have had in Year 2!

English

In English, we started our new instruction-writing unit based on Mrs Armitage's Bike. We explored the different nouns that Mrs Armitage added to her bike, such as a horn and a bucket, and thought of exciting adjectives to describe them, such as noisy and clean. We learnt that when a noun and an adjective are put together, it creates a noun phrase.

We then used our imaginations to design and label our own crazy bikes, just like Mrs Armitage's! The children came up with some wonderfully creative ideas and used noun phrases to describe the different parts of their bikes. We also practised reading and spelling words containing our Phase 3 and Phase 5 sounds.

Maths

This week, we completed our work on place value. We focused on using number lines to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. Some of the challenges were quite tricky, but the children showed great determination and worked hard throughout.

We then now moved on to addition and have been using a 100 square to help us solve number problems. We encouraged the children to start on the first number and count on, helping them to become more confident and efficient mathematicians.

Topic - Map Masters

We started an exciting new mini-topic called Map Masters. This week, our focus was learning about the seven continents of the world. We enjoyed singing a catchy continents song to help us remember their names and locations. We also used a world map to find where we live and explored how our country fits into the wider world.

Well done, Year 2, for another week of hard work, enthusiasm and fantastic learning! We look forward to another exciting week ahead.
