Shark’s Weekly Blog (Autumn 1 week 1)

Welcome Back!

A huge welcome back to all of our Year 2 children and families after the summer break! It has been absolutely lovely to see everyone back in school this week. The children have returned with enthusiasm and smiles, and we are so proud of how well they have settled into their new classroom routines. They have shown a fantastic attitude towards learning and have adapted brilliantly to the expectations of Year 2.

In English this week, we have started reading Oliver's Fruit Salad. The children have enjoyed exploring the story and discussing the different fruits that Oliver uses in his delicious fruit salad. As part of our learning, the children have been creating lists of ingredients and designing their own imaginative fruit salads. We have been encouraging them to think carefully about their spelling choices and to apply their Phase 3 and Phase 5 phonics knowledge when writing. The children have worked hard to sound out words, use their phonics to spell independently and present their ideas clearly.

In Maths this week, we have been practising counting forwards to 100 and developing our understanding of place value. The children have been thinking carefully about what each digit is worth and how numbers are made up of tens and ones. To strengthen their understanding, the children have worked with a range of manipulatives, including cubes, counters and place value resources. These practical activities have helped them to visualise numbers, spot patterns and build confidence when explaining their mathematical thinking. We have been very impressed with their enthusiasm and willingness to share their ideas and strategies with their classmates.

This week, we have also launched our first mini project, Healthy Humans. The children have been learning about the human life cycle and exploring how people grow and change throughout their lives. Through our continuous provision activities, the children have been strengthening their understanding of the different stages of the human life cycle. They have enjoyed working collaboratively with their classmates, sharing ideas and discussing what they have learned. It has been wonderful to see such excellent teamwork, creativity and communication skills on display.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead!
