Clever Koalas- Autumn 1 Week 5

Date: 8th Oct 2026 @ 4:40pm

What a busy and exciting week it has been in Koalas Class! The children have worked incredibly hard and have shown great enthusiasm in all of their learning. We are very proud of their efforts and would like to share some of the highlights from the week.

Maths

In Maths, we began the week by exploring area. The children learned how to find the area of both regular and irregular shapes by counting and calculating the number of square units inside them. They showed great perseverance when tackling some of the more challenging irregular shapes and enjoyed explaining their methods to their classmates.

Later in the week, we moved on to learning about angles. We investigated the differences between acute, obtuse and reflex angles, using angle detectives' skills to identify and sort them. The children were particularly excited to discover reflex angles, as they were a completely new type of angle for many of them!

English

In English, we continued developing our grammar knowledge by learning about parenthesis. The children practised using brackets, commas and dashes to add extra information to their sentences and began to think carefully about how this can make writing more interesting for the reader.

We also had our first introduction to relative clauses. This was a brand-new concept for many of the children, and they worked hard to understand how relative pronouns can be used to add extra detail to a sentence. We were impressed by how quickly they began applying these new skills in their own writing and look forward to building on this learning in the coming weeks.

Other Subjects

Our History learning took us beyond the Shang Dynasty this week as we began exploring the Zhou Dynasty. The children discovered how the Zhou rulers changed Ancient China and started to compare life during the Zhou Dynasty with what they had already learned about the Shang Dynasty.

One of the highlights of the week was Global Schools Day on Thursday. It was wonderful to see the children celebrating their backgrounds and cultures by wearing clothes that represented their countries and heritage. Throughout the day, they took part in activities that helped us appreciate the diversity within our school community. The children also decorated flags with beautiful drawings and symbols that represented where they are from. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate what makes us unique while recognising the things we all have in common.
