Autumn 1 - Week 3

Date: 19th Sep 2025 @ 12:34pm

In English this week, the children have practised using exciting adjectives to describe the camp in the ‘Stone Age Boy’ story. They practised using a Thesaurus to up-level simpler adjectives like ‘big’ and ‘’happy’. The children also practised using conjunctions like ‘but’ ‘until’ and ‘or’ to add extra detail to sentences about the story. We have also had a focus on using the past tense and discussed how some verbs use the ending ‘ed’ and other verbs are irregular verbs e.g sleep become slept.

In Maths, the children have learned about adding and subtracting 10 and 100 to numbers. E.g 138 + 10 = 148 because the tens digit (3) changes and gets larger but the other numbers remain the same. The children also learned strategies for how to add and subtract using mental maths. If they had a question like 39 – 5. They practised mentally subtracting the ones (9-5) and knowing that the 3 tens would stay the same.

In History, the children learned about Stone Age monuments. We looked closely at Stone Henge and went on a virtual tour. The children also learned about the Cheddar Man – a Mesolithic hunter-gatherer who lived in Britain about 10,000 years ago, and whose nearly complete skeleton was discovered in Gough's Cave, Cheddar Gorge, in 1903. Ask your child if they can remember any facts about him!

Please continue to read with your child and record reading in their reading diary. The children are getting points for regularly reading at home. Home Learning is given out every Thursday to be returned the following Thursday. Please support your child to complete their weekly projects. Thank you!
