Autumn 1, Week 3 Blog Monkeys Class

Date: 19th Sep 2025 @ 1:44pm

In English this week, the children have practised using exciting adjectives to describe the camp in the ‘Stone Age Boy’ story. They practised using a Thesaurus to up-level simpler adjectives like ‘big’ and ‘’happy’. The children also practised using conjunctions like ‘but’ ‘until’ and ‘or’ to add extra detail to sentences about the story. We have also had a focus on using the past tense and discussed how some verbs use the ending ‘ed’ and other verbs are irregular verbs e.g sleep become slept.

In Maths, the children have learned about adding and subtracting 10 and 100 to numbers. E.g 138 + 10 = 148 because the tens digit (3) changes and gets larger but the other numbers remain the same. The children also learned strategies for how to add and subtract using mental maths. If they had a question like 39 – 5. They practised mentally subtracting the ones (9-5) and knowing that the 3 tens would stay the same.

In History, the children learned about Stone Age monuments. We looked closely at Stone Henge and went on a virtual tour. The children also learned about the Cheddar Man – a Mesolithic hunter-gatherer who lived in Britain about 10,000 years ago, and whose nearly complete skeleton was discovered in Gough's Cave, Cheddar Gorge, in 1903. Ask your child if they can remember any facts about him!

In RE, the children learned about the Jewish festival of Passover and they studied the food that Jewish people prepare on the Seder Plate and its significance.

In PE, the children have continued to develop their throwing skills and aim in Dodgeball and have practised working in pairs to create movements to represent the character of Matilda in Dance lessons.

The children are looking forward to participating in Ukulele lessons (every Friday until February half term). Please complete the parent acceptable use agreement form (AUA) so that your child can take their ukulele home to practise their learning.

Please continue to read with your child and record reading in their reading diary. The children are getting points for regularly reading at home. Home Learning will be given out on paper every Thursday. Please support your child to complete their weekly projects. The home learning must be returned to school before the following Thursday – Thank you!
